POMA Group, a France-based Poma ropeway transportation solutions provider, has been awarded a sub contract by Hyundai Engineering & Construction for the Ain Dubai, the world’s tallest observation wheel in Dubai, UAE.

Planned to be completed in time for Expo 2020 Dubai celebrations, the Ain Dubai is being built on Bluewaters, Meraas’ island destination in Dubai. It stands more than 250m above the Bluewaters island destination.

Strategically positioned at 500m off the beach, the Meraas’ beachfront destination is located opposite JBR and near Dubai Marina which includes entertainment and retail zones.

Under the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract, POMA will be responsible for providing 48 capsules for Ain Dubai.

POMA said it has already commenced project management, engineering and procurement work for the observation wheel.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction serves as the general contractor for the project, which will be able to carry up to 1,400 passengers in its 48 capsules featuring smart climate control and LED screens.

In April 2019, Ain Dubai developer Meraas said that the eighth and final 450t temporary spoke had been removed from the project while the last permanent cables had been installed.

In a statement, Meraas said: "With the removal of the final temporary steel spoke, the weight of the wheel rim has been entirely transferred to 192 spoke cables, which ensure the structural integrity of Ain Dubai through the process of permanent compression.

"Cumulatively, the eight temporary steel spokes and rim braces weighed more than 5,000 tonnes."

About 9,000 tonnes of steel is used in the construction of Ain Dubai, which is claimed to be over 200% taller than the first ever Ferris wheel.

The cable wires for the project which holdings the wheel rim in place have cumulative length equal to distance from Dubai to Cairo, Meraas noted.

Dubai-based Meraas has portfolio and activity in real estate, tourism, hospitality, healthcare, technology, retail, F&B, leisure & entertainment.
