Construction begins at UCSF centre in California
28 January 2011Construction has begun on the new University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center at Mission Bay, designed by William McDonough + Partners in collaboration with Anshen + Allen, in the US.
Spanning 878,000 square feet, the new hospital complex is the first phase of the $1.6 billion project that will include an energy center, helipad, and support services. The first phase will include construction of a 289-bed hospital, specialising in care for women, children and cancer patients. The evidence-based design of the centre has responded to support new ways to advance healthcare and contribute to the healing process by providing connections to nature and integrating sustainability at all levels. The design features balanced use of in-depth materials analysis of patient room finishes in order to ensure that every feature supports healing. Extensive study was also done on patient room daylighting and visual comfort, roof top photovoltaic layout configuration, and on site water balance strategies. The new UCSF Medical Center has been designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. It features low-voltage lighting controls, and energy-efficient electrical and HVAC equipment. The facility will also incorporate recycled materials throughout. California-based Rosendin Electric is undertaking the construction of the new centre at a cost of $80 million. It is scheduled for completion in 2014.
