CertainTeed Gypsum to invest $160 million for a wallboard plant in North Carolina

Florida-based CertainTeed Gypsum Inc., a construction materials manufacturer, is planning to invest $160 million during the next three years for a wallboard manufacturing plant in Roxboro, North Carolina, US.

The gypsum wallboard manufacturing plant will be located on a site adjacent to Progress Energy's Roxboro plant at Hyco Lake. Construction contracts will be given in the next few weeks. The site was chosen for the local supply of high purity synthetic gypsum, which will be supplied by the nearby Progress Energy plant. Gypsum, which is a naturally occurring mineral, is widely used in construction, various plaster products and personal care products.

The plant is expected to create 89 jobs and is partly funded by a $300,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund. The plant might also receive matching incentives from the county, which is a requirement of the state grant.

CertainTeed Gypsum has three existing plants in North Carolina. It also has a roofing facility in Oxford, and facilities in Claremont and North Wilkesboro.

The One North Carolina Fund provides financial assistance through local governments to attract business projects. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds, according to the governor's office. The grants also require and are contingent upon local matches.
