Ballast Nedam constructs new biomass power plant in Netherlands

27 July 2011

Dutch construction and infrastructure firm Ballast Nedam in partnership with German company Areva Renewables GmbH and Finland-based Metso Power Oy will commence construction work on biomass power plant in Delfzijl, Netherlands.

The power plant, located alongside the maritime channel, has been commissioned by BioEnergieCentrale Delfzijl BV (Eneco Solar, Bio & Hydro BV). Ballast Nedam's contract is valued at €48 million ($69 million). The plant has a capacity to generate 49MW, which has enough electricity to meet the needs of 120,000 households and will produce energy from recycled waste wood chips. Currently, there are four wood-burning power plants in the Netherlands, mostly linked to waste incinerators and generating about 90MW of energy. Ballast Nedam's scope of work includes supervising the licensing process and the design & construct of the project's civil engineering and structural components. The BEC Delfzijl power plant will commence operations in the mid-2013.
