Almar Water Solutions, through Abdul Latif Jameel and Rawafid Alhadarah, and its consortium partners Spanish infrastructure company Acciona and Japanese firm Marubeni Corporation have laid the foundation stone at the IWP Shuqaiq-3 desalination project in Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea coast.

Scheduled to be completed in 2021, the IWP Shuqaiq-3 desalination plant is claimed to be one of the largest seawater desalination plants in the country.

Reverse osmosis technology will be used at the plant, which will be able to produce 450,000m³ of drinking water every day.

Acciona, along with its consortium partners, was selected by Water and Electricity Company (WEC), the Saudi Arabia state-owned company in charge of desalination and water treatment projects, to finance, design and build the Shuqaiq-3 desalination plant and operate and maintain it for 25 years.

The project, valued at €750m ($824m), will be implemented under a build, own and operate (BOO) contract.

Acciona claimed that the technology used at the desalination plant will be an efficient and safe alternative to thermal desalination technology. The plant will be able to serve more than 1.8 million citizens, contributing to the economic and industrial development in the country.

Shuqaiq-3 is also expected to create thousands of jobs during the construction period.

According to Acciona, it was chosen because it offered a desalinated water price of $0.5m³, which is claimed to be among the most competitive rates globally.

IWP Shuqaiq-3 will be the third desalination plant that Acciona will build in the country. In July, Acciona won a contract to build the Al-Khobar 1 desalination plant in Al-Khobar.

Being built at a cost of €200m ($219m), the Al-Khobar 1 plant will serve a population of 350,000 and also supply water to Aramco.

In 2012, the Spanish company secured a contract to design, build and commission the Al Jubail seawater desalination plant, which since 2015 served the city and the industrial complex in the country’s Eastern Province on the Persian Gulf coast.
