Acciona JV wins £582m Norwegian rail contract

A joint venture of Implenia and Acciona has been awarded a contract worth €650m (£582m) to build Sandbukta - Moss - Såstad (SMS 2A) project, a new railway line through the town of Moss in Norway.

The contract, awarded by Norwegian government agency Bane NOR, includes the construction of a 10.3km, twin-track line between Sandbukta and Såstad.

The new line also requires building two tunnels (Moss Tunnel and Carlberg Tunnel), each longer than 2km, two shorter cut-and-cover sections, a tunnel portal and a new train station in Moss, with 800m-long platforms and pedestrian bridge. As part of the work, 400m of loose-ground cover will also be built wherever the conditions demand.

The contract forms part of a major InterCity project, which aims to improve train links between towns and cities in the east of the country.

Bane NOR stated that the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) is working with the local community to ensure area stability is maintained, with safe implementation of the work is carried out.

Implenia will take technical lead of the joint venture. Implenia’s share in the contract is 55% and is worth NOK3.4bn (£314.6m).

The joint venture will soon begin the planning and supplementary basic surveys. Construction work will start this October and is expected to be completed by May 2025

Implenia Norway President Audun Aaland said: “We are extremely pleased to win this contract and become part of the InterCity infrastructure project. We look forward to contributing the knowledge and skills we have gained in other large-scale projects, and to be working with ACCIONA.”

Acciona construction business managing director Huberto Moreno said: “We are very pleased to have been selected, along with our partner Implenia, to develop this new railway project. This award reinforces ACCIONA's position in Norway, a key market for our Company.

“Based on our successful previous experience with Bane NOR´s management team and their professionalism, we strongly believe that we will be able to develop and finish this great complex project with the best possible results.

“ACCIONA, in collaboration with Implenia, hopes to contribute to the InterCity initiative, developed by BaneNor, with the experience with which approaches all its projects.”
