Spanish conglomerate group Acciona has started construction on the 64MWp Usya solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Chile.

Being built in the municipality of Calama in Antofagasta region, the Usya facility is said to be the company's third project in the country.

Planned to be commissioned in mid-2020, the Usya plant will feature 187,200 modules which will be mounted on fixed structures. It will occupy a surface area of 105ha.

With a maximum capacity of 64 peak megawatts (MWp) -51MW rated capacity, the Usya solar project is estimated to have annual emission-free energy generation of 146 gigawatt-hours (GWh) which is equivalent to the electricity demand of around 70,000 Chilean households.

ACCIONA South America energy division director José Ignacio Escobar said: “With the start of construction work on Usya, ACCIONA is implementing the 600-million-dollar investment plan we announced last year for the construction of four new clean energy facilities in Chile.

"We are also fulfilling our commitment to make the investments to support previously signed electric power supply contracts."

The solar project is expected to create around 400 jobs during pear construction phase.

Acciona, in a statement, said: "After it enters service, the new plant will avoid the emission of around 141,000 equivalent tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere from coal-fired power stations."

The firm plans to commission two other solar PV plants in late 2019/early 2020 and is currently constructing two wind farms with combined capacity of almost 400MW in Chile.

Upon commissioning of three solar projects and two wind projects, Acciona's total installed capacity will increase to almost 700MW in Chile by 2020. The total cost of the five projects is estimated at approximately $1bn (£784.8m).

Recently, Acciona has signed an agreement with UDP Renewables (UDPR) to build two solar PB plants in the region of Odessa, south-western Ukraine.

The two plants, with combined capacity of 43.7MWp– 33.3MW rated capacity, will be built with a total investment of €30.6m (£27.3m).
