ABB wins $250 million contract to build new substations in Saudi Arabia
3 February 2012Swiss power and automation technology group ABB has secured orders worth more than $250 million from the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), a state run power transmission and distribution company, to build new substations and upgrade the existing ones in Saudi Arabia.
Pursuant to the contract, the company will build a new gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations at southwest of Al-Hassa in the eastern region. The new substation will transmit an additional 2,000MW of electricity from a new gas-fired power plant, which is undergoing development, to an existing Qurayyah power station of SEC. In addition, the company will also construct six new distribution substations and upgrade three existing substations in Riyadh and other cities in the central region. Under the scope of the contract, ABB will design, supply, install and commission the new substations. The company will also supply of key equipment such as GIS, transformers, shunt reactors and capacitor banks and will also deliver a range of solutions such as SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) and automation, control, protection and communication equipment compliant with the global IEC 61850 standard. This will assist SEC to remotely monitor and control power assets located at multiple sites from its power control centre.
