Highways England has announced a £170M plan to upgrade the A303 road in Somerset, UK.

Under the plan, which forms part of UK government’s £15bn investment in motorways and major A roads between 2015 and 2020, the key route between Sparkford and Ilchester will be upgraded to ease traffic congestion.

The project will also include the creation of 48km of dual carriageway between Mere and South Petherton.

Highways England is consulting on two proposed routes and is urging residents to have their say on the plans. The preferred route between Sparkford and Ilchester will be announced in late 2017, and construction work is anticipated to commence in 2020.

Highways England CEO Jim O’Sullivan said: “This scheme will be really good news for people travelling to and from the south-west, particularly during the busy summer months.

“Our consultation and public exhibitions will provide an excellent opportunity to explain further our plans and to hear feedback from people on our proposals to deliver the scheme.”
